Raccoons

2005 Rescue and Release

These raccoon babies lost their mother when she was trapped, leaving them orphans when they were only 3 weeks old. Sadly, one died from starvation before they were brought to MWR. Raccoons are wild animals that will eat anything including rodents around barns. Despite their "helpful" nature, they do not make good "pets". Raccoons are omnivores that will eat anything but that doesn't mean they can survive eating table scraps or dog food. They need a wide variety of wild foods - and contrary to popular legend, they do not have to "get it wet first". Raccoons just like to play in the water! MWR Volunteer Rehabilitators Ronelle May and Hilda Butler work as a team to provide a temporary refuge, care and training for needy orphaned raccoons. MS Wildlife Rehabilitators care for dozens of orphaned or injured raccoons every year until they are ready to be re-released back into the wilds of Mississippi.
