Practical Wildlife Care
- Les Stocker Wildlife care and rehabilitation is often on a one-to-one basis and involves a lot of time, care and skill. However, for many years, care of injured wildlife was regarded as a low priority and euthanasia was the recommended option. A lot has changed over the past twenty years and now caring for wildlife casualties is part of everyday life in many veterinary practices. Covers a whole range of species, with sections on birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and many 'alien' species such as exotic reptiles. In this edition you will find essential guidance on handling, first aid, feeding and releasing, and many other disciplines not featured in veterinary or nursing training. |

Chimney Swifts: America's Mysterious Birds above the Fireplace
- Paul and Georgean Kyle From the curious sounds of baby swifts chattering in the chimney to the awe-inspiring sight of birds entering their roost at dusk, like smoke swirling back into the flue, Chimney Swifts have captured the imagination of many generations of North Americans. These sleek birds with crescent-shaped wings and acrobatic flight patterns migrate to North America from the Amazon River Basin each spring to breed and raise their young. But by the late 1980s, changes in chimney construction and homeowner attitudes had contributed to a major decline in the numbers of Chimney Swifts. Authors Paul and Georgean Kyle have worked ceaselessly in an attempt to alter that trend. |

The Tale of Peter Rabbit
- Beatrix Potter The quintessential cautionary tale, Peter Rabbit warns naughty children about the grave consequences of misbehaving. When Mrs. Rabbit beseeches her four furry children not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden, the impish Peter naturally takes this as an open invitation to create mischief. He quickly gets in over his head, when he is spotted by farmer McGregor himself. Any child with a spark of sass will find Peter's adventures remarkably familiar. And they'll see in Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail that bane of their existence: the "good" sibling who always does the right thing. One earns bread and milk and blackberries for supper, while the obstinate folly of the other warrants medicine and an early bedtime. |

Sky Dancer
- Jack Bushnell It is about a little girl on a farm who has red hair. A red tail starts hanging around her farm and she is sure it is because of her red hair. She goes to town with her father and listens to another farmer that is sure the red tail is killing his chickens. He goes to the farm to shoot the red tail, but the girl screams and the farmer misses his shot. The father convinces the other farmer not to shoot the bird. And it turns out that a fox is killing the chickens. I do not know how I like the ending, but enjoyed the fact that the little girl was willing to help save the red tail. It never says if the fox gets killed. |

Night Tree
- Eve Bunting It is about a family that has the tradition of going to the woods every Christmas eve and decorating "their" tree with edible ornaments for the animas. And shows the animals at the end coming and eating the ornaments. I have started to use that at Christmas time and read the story, have kids and their family make edible ornaments and then we decorate a tree outside for the animals. In VT we were very lucky in that just after we decorated the tree chickadees came right away to eat with the kids there. |

Matthew's Meadow
- Corine Demas Bliss The boy Matthew spends time on a family meadow that his grandmother had cleared. After his grandmother dies he goes up there from 9-16 years old and develops a relationship with a red tailed hawk that helps him appreciate the natural world. As an adult he is able to feel the continuity of things from one generation to the next. I loved the book (might have to do with the red tail). There are some reviews that say it is a bit complicated and far out. |
