MWR Minute – April 2026

Spring is in full bloom—and for MWR, that means baby birds… lots and lots of them!

Over the next several months, we’ll receive hundreds of calls about baby birds.

Found a Baby Bird?

Please Contact us ASAP.
Please text a photo or video of the baby (or babies) to 662-612-6455, and include a one-sentence description of how you encountered them (found on the ground, disturbed the nest, cat attack). Based on the information you provide, we will determine the species and age of the bird to assess the situation and offer guidance.

Contrary to the generic “I found a baby bird” flow charts and much of the information online, a baby bird found on the ground is often one that needs help.

There are about 60 species of songbirds known to breed in North Mississippi. The young of over half of these species leave the nest partially or fully flighted.

A handful of species—such as Northern Mockingbird, American Robin, Brown Thrasher, and Blue Jay —leave the nest unable to fly. Fledglings of these species have fully feathered bodies, short stubby tails, and can hop around while following their parents on the ground or in low bushes. This is normal.

Most other birds—such as Barn Swallow, Purple Martin, Eastern Bluebird, Chickadees and many others—leave the nest already able to fly or glide well. It is not normal for fledglings of these species to be on the ground.

While waiting for a response from MWR or another licensed wildlife rehabilitator, safely contain the baby and DO NOT offer food, water, or medication.  The wrong food or feeding technique can quickly kill a baby bird. Fluids given orally can be aspirated, leading to respiratory infection—or death.

Keep the baby warm, dark, and quiet.  Handling and exposure to light, sound, and movement will stress the bird and increase its metabolism, causing it to use up critical energy reserves.

And a friendly reminder: without professional training and permits, it is unlawful to possess a native bird—even if you intend to return it to the wild.

Thank you Scouts

We were honored to host Scout Troop 1 for a recent day of service at the ARK Wildlife Hospital! Their group dedicated the day to tackling a wide range of much-needed projects around the facility. From painting and weeding to assisting with basic plumbing repairs, these scouts showed incredible teamwork, initiative, and a willingness to jump in wherever help was needed.

Their hard work made a meaningful impact on our ability to maintain and improve the hospital for the wildlife in our care. Days like this truly help us stretch our resources further and focus more on what matters most—rehabilitating native birds and reptiles.

Of course, no visit is complete without meeting one of our ambassadors! The troop had the opportunity to meet Vinny, our Black Vulture, and learn more about the important role vultures play in our ecosystem.

We are especially grateful to MWR Board Member Kate Friedman for overseeing and organizing such a successful and productive day.

Thank you, Scout Troop 1, for your service, enthusiasm, and support of Mississippi’s native wildlife!   Check out pics from the day HERE

*     Valery E. Smith Nature Center Update

We are excited to share that progress at the Valery E. Smith Nature Center continues to move forward in meaningful ways.

We are incredibly grateful to Craig Manning and Manning Fence Co LLC for beginning construction of the outer fence for our raptor garden. This important addition will provide enhanced security and a more stable, low-stress environment for our ambassador raptors, directly improving their quality of life and ability to participate in education programs.

Even more exciting, this space will serve as a canvas for Sycamore Arts Council, who have generously partnered with us to create a large-scale mural. This artwork will highlight many of the native species we care for and educate about, transforming the raptor garden into an inspiring and visually engaging experience for visitors.

Check out pics HERE

Our native plant garden is also thriving. With each passing week, it becomes more established and continues to demonstrate the value of planting for wildlife. We are already seeing a growing number of native pollinators—including bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects—as well as birds utilizing the space for food and shelter. This garden is quickly becoming a living example of how intentional habitat creation can make an immediate impact.

Take a walk through our garden HERE

These ongoing improvements are helping shape the Nature Center into a place where wildlife and community can connect in meaningful ways. We are grateful for the partners, volunteers, and supporters who make this work possible and look forward to sharing continued progress in the months ahead.

This project is made possible through the generous support of Entergy Mississippi and their Environmental Initiatives Fund.

Wildlife Hospital – By the Numbers

In April we saw a significant increase admitting 188 new patients, representing  38 bird, 4 reptile and 1 amphibian species. So far this year, we have cared for a total of 318 new patients.

Check out these patient highlights from March:

·       Fledging Loggerhead Shrike

·       American Coot

·       Great horned owlet

If you come across a wild bird or reptile in distress, please do not attempt to care for it yourself. Improper handling or feeding can do more harm than good and may violate federal or state wildlife laws. Please reach out to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

MWR Volunteer Spotlight: Julie Perry

Volunteers are the hands, feet, and heart behind Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation’s (MWR) mission. We simply couldn’t do what we do without their incredible dedication. Each month, we’re proud to spotlight one of the amazing people who help bring our work to life.

This month, we’re thrilled to recognize Julie Perry.

Julie first connected with MWR in 2020 while helping with a few snake education programs and officially became a dedicated volunteer in 2025 after hearing about the new native garden project.

She says, “Nature is a big part of my life and I love native plants, so this was the perfect place for me to be in helping with the garden. It’s my therapy and I love seeing the wildlife it brings. The people of MWR share the same passion in helping animals and they are also nature lovers, so it’s such an awesome team to be a part of.”

Through her work in the native garden, Julie helps create habitat that benefits local wildlife while also inspiring others to appreciate the importance of native plants and healthy ecosystems.

🌿 Fun Fact:
Julie shares, “I was terrified of snakes my whole life until I turned 35. One day while fishing, I saw a bunch of them and suddenly became fascinated. Now I’m completely obsessed with snakes and love them so much — especially venomous species!”

🌿 Thank you, Julie, for your dedication, compassion, and the positive impact you make for wildlife and the MWR community every day.

MWR is currently in need of dedicated volunteers to help in the following areas:
• Social Media Coordinator
• Wildlife Rehabilitation / Animal Care
• Baby Bird Care / Feeding (Spring & Summer)
• Education Programs
• Rehab Patient Transport
• Fundraising

MWR Minute – January 2026

January brought ice and snow as Winter Storm Fern swept across our region. Our hearts and prayers are with everyone impacted by this severe weather.

During winter storms, wildlife faces frozen water sources, limited food, and exposure to harsh environmental conditions. You can help by placing shallow dishes of fresh (unfrozen) water outside, offering species-appropriate food such as seed for birds, and leaving natural cover like brush piles, fallen leaves, and hollow logs undisturbed. Avoid using ice melt products near natural areas and never bring wildlife indoors—if an animal appears injured or compromised, contact a licensed rehabilitator.

Despite the winter conditions, our team has already received numerous patients. Among them is an American Bald Eagle, admitted weak and unable to fly, with suspected lead poisoning. Lead toxicity remains one of the most serious and preventable threats facing raptors and other scavenging wildlife. While the prognosis for lead poisoning is often guarded, our medical team is providing intensive care and treatment to give this majestic bird the best possible chance of recovery.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Mississippi Game Warden John Bray and MWR volunteer Theresa Hissong for ensuring this eagle was transported safely to our facility.

👉 See more about this rescue here!

🦅 How You Can Help Prevent Lead Poisoning
Lead fragments from ammunition and fishing tackle can remain in the environment long after use, where they are easily ingested by wildlife. You can help protect eagles and other native species by choosing non-lead ammunition and fishing gear, properly disposing of carcasses and gut piles, and sharing this information with others who spend time outdoors.

To learn more about lead poisoning in wildlife and steps you can take to prevent it, read this article from the American Eagle Foundation.

Valery E Smith Nature Center update

We’re excited to share progress at the Valery E. Smith Nature Center. A big thank you to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for addressing critical ceiling repairs in the space designated for our future interpretive center. These much-needed improvements were an essential step in preparing the building for the next phase of development.

With this work completed, we can now begin building out the interpretive center —transforming the space into an engaging hub for environmental education, conservation awareness, and community connection. This center will provide visitors with meaningful opportunities to learn about Mississippi’s native wildlife and habitats.

We’re grateful for our partners who help move projects like this forward and look forward to sharing more updates as this space continues to take shape.

MWR Minute – December 2025

This year will go down as a true milestone for Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation/Coldwater River Nature Conservancy.  In what can only be described as a year for the history books, our team cared for 1,136 animals—1,062 birds representing 104 species, 73 reptiles from 11 species, and even one amphibian. That total marks a 46% increase over the previous year and the largest number of patients we have ever treated, reflecting both the growing need for wildlife rehabilitation and the unwavering dedication of our staff and volunteers, who collectively contributed more than 9,000 hours of service.

Beyond patient care, our reach into the community expanded in powerful ways. Through 34 education and outreach programs, we connected with nearly 10,000 people across the region, welcoming families to beloved traditions like our 6th Annual Trunk or Treat and our 2nd Annual Critter Christmas.

We also celebrated new beginnings by launching our first annual Lucky Dog Pub Run, returning this St. Patrick’s Day, and hosting our second annual MWR Charity Golf Tournament—both of which generated essential funds to directly support our mission of saving native Mississippi wildlife.

From the laughter and discovery of Nature Explorer Summer Camp to the joy of hosting a wedding at our Entergy Education pavilion, the ARK trails in Hernando and the Virginia Trails in Senatobia, continue to be places where people, wildlife, and community connect with nature.

All of this unfolded as we made significant progress on the Valery E. Smith Community Nature Center, bringing us ever closer to a future rooted in conservation, education, and connection. We are incredibly grateful to every volunteer, donor, partner, and supporter who makes this work possible, and we warmly invite you to continue the journey with us as we look ahead to new adventures and meaningful progress in 2026.

Valery E Smith Nature Center update

We’ve made incredible progress on the Nature Center! While we’ve encountered some unexpected delays, steady work is bringing us closer to a hoped-for spring opening.

Seven new enclosures in our Raptor Garden will soon house our education ambassador owls, hawks, an American kestrel, and Vinny the Black Vulture. Visitors will have the chance to get up close and learn about these amazing birds. Check out the progress.

Our native plant garden has been planted to support local birds and pollinators, featuring sustainable ideas you can adopt at home—like rain barrels, insect hotels, and rain gardens. We are eagerly anticipating spring when these plants return and bring even more life to the garden. We’ve also completed an outdoor box turtle exhibit, where you can observe these charming turtles going about their day in a natural setting.

A special thank you to our sponsors who have made this project possible: Entergy, Memphis Stone & Gravel, Lowe’s of Southaven, Valspar, Tennessee College of Applied Technology Memphis, Quality Landscape Olive Branch, Construction Waste Management, Camp Creek Native Plants, Shea Staten, Manning Fence Company, our incredible MWR volunteers, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

There’s still more to come! Work will soon begin on our indoor interpretive center, featuring live reptile exhibits, interactive displays, and a memorial wall honoring our founder. Stay tuned for more exciting updates!

MWR Volunteer Spotlight: Brett Hogan

Volunteers are the hands, feet, and heart behind Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation’s (MWR) mission. We simply couldn’t do what we do without their incredible dedication. Each month, we’re proud to spotlight one of the amazing people who help bring our work to life.

This month, we’re thrilled to recognize MWR Board Member Brett Hogan!

Brett began volunteering with MWR in 2020 (he thinks!).  In addition to serving as a Board Member he has supported the organization in countless ways, including:

  • Design and construction of wildlife enclosures
  • Education ambassador training and care
  • Wildlife rescue and transportation
  • Feeding and care of wildlife patients
  • Education programs
  • Serving as MWR’s primary IT support, including infrastructure setup, technical support, and website design and maintenance

As the husband of Wildlife Director Stephanie Hogan, Brett initially volunteered to support his wife—but he quickly became deeply invested in MWR’s mission. Brett shares that he “also cares deeply about the wildlife we help and our environmental impact.”

Fun Fact: Brett has lived in 24 different homes! In less than six months, Hernando, MS will become the place he’s lived the longest—currently, Goodyear, AZ still holds that title (for now).

🌿 Thank you, Brett, for your dedication, leadership, and behind-the-scenes impact that helps MWR thrive.

MWR is currently in need of dedicated volunteers to help in the following areas:
• Social Media Coordinator
• Wildlife Rehabilitation / Animal Care
• Baby Bird Care / Feeding (Spring & Summer)
• Education Programs
• Rehab Patient Transport
• Fundraising

MWR Minute – November 2025

In this month of Thanksgiving, we are deeply grateful for the many supporters who have made this historic year possible. Thanks to you, MWR has achieved record levels of patient care, providing critical treatment, rehabilitation, and second chances to native wildlife across our region. We have also made significant progress on the Valery E. Smith Nature Center, a project that will expand our ability to educate the community, protect habitats, and serve as a sanctuary for wildlife for generations to come.

As we look toward the end of the year, we invite you to consider making a year-end gift. Your support sustains our mission, strengthens our programs, and directly impacts the wildlife that depends on us every single day.

MWR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.

Volunteer Appreciation

November thanks continued as we celebrated our volunteers with an Appreciation Dinner, honoring the priceless contributions they have made to MWR. 🍂 1000th patient

On October 4th we admitted an Eastern Screech Owl that had been caught on someone’s back porch. While this little owl is one of eight screech owls we’ve cared for this year it represents something very special: our 1000th patient of 2025!

Thankfully this little owl was released back to the wild.  See more here

This milestone sets a new record for Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc., with patient numbers continuing to grow each year—nearly 800 in 2024 and 600 in 2023.

This achievement has only been possible thanks to the dedicated and tireless efforts of our Wildlife Director, Stephanie Hogan , and our amazing volunteers. We are so grateful for their hard work and passion. 💚

We are excited about making an even greater impact for wildlife as we finish out the year—thank you for supporting our mission and helping us give wildlife a second chance! 🦉🌿

Nature Center Update

Exciting progress continues at the Valery E. Smith Nature Center!

MWR Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Brown

Volunteers are the hands, feet, and heart that power Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation’s (MWR) mission. We simply couldn’t do what we do without their incredible contributions of time and talent. Each month, we highlight one of the amazing people who help bring our mission to life.

This month, we’re excited to spotlight Karen Brown, MWR Board Secretary!

Screenshot

Karen began volunteering in the fall of 1997, when she found orphaned flying squirrels in need of rescue. A local veterinarian connected her with MWR’s founder, Valery E. Smith, sparking not only Karen’s longtime involvement with MWR but also a treasured friendship. At the time, MWR was just beginning—Val had one volunteer and worked out of her basement triage hospital. Karen was deeply inspired by her vision and dedication.

Karen quickly jumped in to help, supporting fundraising efforts with yard sales, bake sales, small donations, and even grant writing to build federally approved enclosures. As the years went on, she witnessed MWR’s growth—more volunteers, more patients, more training workshops, and a steadily expanding impact.

Over the years, Karen has faithfully served on MWR’s Board of Directors in nearly every office, and today she continues to serve as Board Secretary. She says, “Val’s dream continues to develop with extremely dedicated volunteers and a Board led by caring individuals. Val is why I am here—MWR’s mission and its people of integrity are why I continue to volunteer, and I am grateful to be a small part.”

Fun Fact: Karen remembers one unforgettable call from a farmer who discovered a Red-tailed Hawk in his chicken coop. Val made the rescue—braving the frightened hawk while fending off an angry rooster!

🌿 Thank you, Karen, for your many years of dedication and leadership in protecting Mississippi’s native wildlife!

MWR is currently in need of dedicated volunteers to help in the following areas:
